A book for our time, written over 100 years ago

As Americans continue to be consumed with politics, I’ve been reading.  The first book I read this new year of 2017 piggy backs on so much of what we need to hear right now.

As A Man Thinketh is not a story.  Its a little book, only 77 pages.  It is comprised of 7 little chapters:

  1. Thought And Character
  2. Effect On Circumstances
  3. Effect Of Thought On Health And Circumstances
  4. Thought And Purpose
  5. The Thought-Factor and Achievement
  6. Visions and Ideals
  7. Serenity

If you haven’t figured it out, its about thinking.  More specifically, its about how thinking effects EVERYTHING-your character, your circumstances, your health, your purpose, your achievement, your vision, and even your serenity!

If you want to take this for face value, it is a fairly basic premise.  However, this book and those like it, are not written for face value.  It is meant to be ingested at the deepest level.

I’ve had this book on my shelf for many, many years.  I think I read it before but I have a bad memory for that.  Only because I have read more recent writings about this subject is it that I get this on a deeper level, AND how it can help or hinder a person, a country, and the world.

If you haven’t figured it out already, fear sells.  A people in a state of fear is a vulnerable society.  A person in fear is paralyzed to moving forward.  Whether you like it or not, the mass media has stirred up TONS of fear over the last few decades.

Regardless of what form it takes, fictionalized TV shows based on crime, politics, scandal, or as “news” from every possible angle, our overindulgence in media without considering how it affects our psyche, circumstances, health or vision has had a massive effect on us.

It’s no surprise that our society is in the state it’s in.  We are bombarded with negativity.  Yes, it is easy to blame the media, but the truth is, it’s our own fault.  We fell asleep at the wheel.

That is what this book is about.  Safeguard your thoughts.  What you ponder is what you get.  If you were brought up thinking that sickness is a part of getting old, then that is probably going to happen to you.  It’s not genetics.  It’s thought.  It’s what you ASSUME to be real.

This is exactly why people with the best of circumstances fail, and those with everything against them succeed–it’s because of what the tell themselves, believe deep down, and safeguard no matter what others say.

Our thoughts effect every aspect of one’s life, every single cell of the body.  The good news (or bad news depending on your perspective) is that WE are in control and it is all up to us. It’s not someone else.  It’s us.  Time to stop playing victim (because that is just a state of mind).  Take responsibility.

Positive attracts positive. Negative attracts negative.  If you are spewing negative shit on social media, what are you perpetuating?  If you are sharing love, what are you creating?

We truly live in enlightened times, regardless of what frame of mind you are in.  James Allen figured this out over 110 years ago and has been confirmed by science.

Step up and accept it, reject the fear, have faith, be hopeful, love.

What is harm in doing that?

What are you afraid will happen if you embrace this?

How will each person’s small act of switching gears affect the world?

You should read the book.  It’s free, and it’s worth it.  It will probably change everything for you.  Is that what you’re afraid of?
